Synopsis

In Slumdog Millionaire, directed by the whiz-bang fabulist Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Sunshine), Jamal (Dev Patel), an 18-year-old Indian orphan who has spent his life scavenging on the streets, lands as a contestant on the Hindi version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, and he wins — big. Don't worry, I'm not giving anything away: An opening title informs us that he wins 20 million rupees (in U.S. currency, that translates roughly as...an awesome amount of cash). The host (Anil Kapoor), who looks like Omar Sharif if he'd been a high-end vacuum-cleaner salesman, models his act on the British version of the show, which may be why he's a lot more condescending than the courtly Regis Philbin. Mercilessly, he mocks Jamal for being a ''chaiwalla'' (a boy who serves tea — extremely low on the class totem pole). Yet the kid is immune to insults — or, it seems, nerves — and he becomes a folk hero as he keeps knocking out those impeccable final answers.

The prospect of an uneducated orphan from the slums of Mumbai winning a pot of gold on a game show that hinges on worldly knowledge is, of course, the stuff of purest fairy tales. Based on Vikas Swarup's novel Q & A, with a script by Simon Beaufoy (The Full Monty), Slumdog Millionaire is nothing if not an enjoyably far-fetched piece of rags-to-riches wish fulfillment. It's like the Bollywood version of a Capra fable sprayed with colorful drops of dark-side-of-the-Third-World squalor. A framing device has Jamal being interrogated by Mumbai cops who want him to confess how he won the show (they believe, wrongly, that he cheated). To let us know how he won, the film keeps flashing back from Jamal's stint on Millionaire to scenes of his life as an innocently scheming Dickensian ragamuffin.

Orphaned during a riot, the young Jamal (Ayush Mahesh Khedekar) skips around India with his older brother, Salim (Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail), the two boys scrambling to survive in a bustling, hothouse landscape of exploitative treachery. They're detained, along with a bunch of other orphans, by a vile crook who doesn't just use them as beggars; in a touch to give Fagin the willies, he likes to blind his orphans by pouring boiling liquid into their eyes, because then they'll earn more sympathy from passersby. The two escape, along with a girl, Latika (Rubina Ali), whom Jamal falls for and keeps trying to rescue. But just as we're reeling from this close encounter with evil, the movie reveals its true, happy design: This episode, and others like it, provides Jamal with the precise piece of information — in this case, a song title — he'll draw on, years later, to answer the questions on Millionaire. The inventor of the revolver, the figure on a $100 bill (he learns that one while scamming U.S. tourists at the Taj Mahal)— all the knowledge he'll need is offered by his life of hardship.

As Slumdog Millionaire jumps from the fear and degradation of Jamal's childhood to the snippet of game-show victory each episode provides, the audience relaxes, secure in the knowledge that the hardship and cruelty on display are, in their way, as much of a fairy tale as the mad-money TV triumph they presage. Slumdog Millionaire is brash and lively and compulsively watchable, but with Boyle working at full boil, it is also an unabashed concoction — a movie that turns the horror of broken Indian childhoods into a whooshingly blithe, in-your-face picaresque. Not since Les Miz have you felt this gooey-good about kids whose lives were this bad.

We follow Jamal and Salim at three different ages (with two sets of nicely matched tyke actors), but it's when Jamal is 18, and played by Dev Patel, that the movie takes on a touch of gravitas. Patel is tall, with a serious thin mouth, sloping eyebrows, and a wiry boyish toughness rather like that of Shia LaBeouf; he holds the camera while appearing to do nothing — the mark of a star. Madhur Mittal, as the older Salim, is a study in contrast — a permed weakling who goes to work for a gangster — but I wish the grown-up Latika (Freida Pinto), whom Jamal finds enslaved to that same thug, looked less like a supermodel. It's all part of the movie's fanciful sentimental tidiness. Slumdog Millionaire rousingly celebrates the escape from the slums, but since it’s Jamal’s childhood that allows him to win big on TV (and to win that girl), you could also say that the movie ennobles poverty.

DEAR 3FC-F4EC MEMBERS.... it was feb. 6 1990 when a young lovely girl named cherrie anne was born... and now GOD took her away from us... (i still don't know the exact date of her death..still waiting for the text from her mom) she suffered from cancer and now GOD don't want her to suffer more, because he loved chean so much that why he saved her from too much pain and chose to take her with him....

Why can't we get all the people together in the world that we really like and then just stay together? I guess that wouldn't work. Someone would leave. Someone always leaves. Then we would have to say good-bye. I hate good-byes. I know what I need. I need more hellos.

hi guys!!!! i am back...recently, i've been very busy on my studies so i wasn't able to post here... but now i'm back and for my comeback post...i wanted to post kwon sang woo's wedding...

After all the hullaballo, Kwon Sang-woo finally married Sohn Tae-young today (September 28), and I for one am glad, since we won�t be having to hear about it anymore.

The couple gave a press conference prior to the wedding, as the wedding itself was closed to the press. Sohn Tae-young wore a Kenneth Pool gown, which she bought on the couple�s recent trip to England.

Kwon: �I�m finally getting married. I�m so nervous � my nerves don�t begin to compare with any film festival or event I�ve been to. � We�ll live happily together. I vow to love her forever.� Sohn: �It doesn�t feel real yet. Actually, I wasn�t nervous at all while getting ready. But now I�m starting to feel it.�

F4 Gives Concert to 30,000 Asian Fans

According to various newsarticles today on F4's mini concert, they put the attendance at the mini-concert from 20,000 - 30,000 people.

F4 sang Waiting For You first, and Can't Lose You, Season of Fireworks, and Goodbye.
Each member also sang 1 solo song each.

Azio will broadcast the concert (Jan 19) and the autograph session (Jan 20) on Jan 26 and 27 for its "Waiting For You" Special.

F4 held their first free outdoor concert at Danshui Fishermen's Wharf last night. It was also Zaizai's first time to appear in public after his broke-up. F4 only sang 8 songs but spent $5.1 millions in that 45-minute short show. They attracted almost 20,000 attendances for which, 10,000 were overseas fans. Based on an average $20,000 spending for a 2-days-3-nights tour, they helped Taiwan Tourism to gain another $2 billions! Since it was overcrowded, a Japanese fan fell on jostle and was send to the hospital by ambulance just before the show began.

Last night, F4 organized a free outdoor concert of their new album "Waiting for You" on a full scale. In addition to a U-shape extended stage, it also designed with 10 types meteor rain like firework effects. The four united to present 4 group songs and took turn for individual solos.

Zaizai, who recently broke-up with his girlfriend, made prior arrangements to refuse interviews. Yet, he appeared "unusually happy" on stage last night. He greeted fans in Japanese and teased to call himself "She Chang" (Principal) at the beginning of the show. Vanness Wu also greeted fans in Korean, followed with Jerry's greetings in Cantonese. In turn, Ken Chu expressed in English. Ken appeared fine on stage like a "dragon" but limped coming off stage because he accidentally injured while practicing his daily routines.

The words seems expressed his feelings for this recent half-month. Jerry Yan showed up wearing a knitted hat embroidered with a "J" at the opening of show. He was criticized as being "schematic" because that was not part of Sony's arrangement. Jerry�s manager Cheng Mao Liang clarified, "The knitted hat was a present from a Mama came from Hokkaido. Her daughter was unable to come because of illness. She hope Jerry can wear it as a blessings on stage." Jerry insisted to put it on regardless how much they spent on his expensive hairstyle. Despites, he kept running off-key on last night's performance. The record company explained that it was their first time holding outdoor concert in such an open area.

F4 will have a Stamping Event at the Red House this afternoon at 3pm. Zaizai promised won't escape from questions again and will clarify with the media.

F4's new album concert and stamping session has come to an end.
Thank you to everyone who made their way here from overseas, and to Taiwan fans for their support towards them too.

The 2 day events were very lively, very exciting, letting F4 feel everyone's support and love for them.
At the same time, we understand that there are some inconvenience caused to fans during the events , and apologize for it.

A fan was injured and taken to the hospital during Danshui's event, at Ximending's events fans were sad and cried coz they were unable to get their passes stamped.
F4 are sad and apologetic for these news.
Based on the events scheduled timings, F4 seriously co-operated with the events. Believed that fans at the event venue saw that they went to Danshui for rehearsal in the morning on 19th. At Ximending stamping session, throughout the few hours they only rested for 10 mins.

when i first heard of this series..i was thinking would i watch this one because...daniel henney is the only one in that cast whose familiar to me... but at the christmas evening...alone...i watched the premiere episode of spring waltz in phil. tv via abs-cbn ch.2...... but suddenly fell inlove with it...although im kinda confused because coffee prince is actually on the same timeslot of spring waltz.... its a clash and i feel sorry for our remote control.... but i am now into the feeling of going crazy over this spring waltz love story.... i love the intensity of the story...and i am so falling inlove with seo do young.... and for that this entry is a tribute to a korean drama series who never failed to make me fall inlove everynight....

Spring Waltz Review
Jae-ha is a genius pianist with a politician father, loving mother, good manager and successful fianc�. However, Jae-ha isn't the Jae-ha his fianc�, Lee-Na, remembers in her childhood. Park Eun-young was a sickly child whose mother worked to earn money so that she could have an operation to save her life. Before her illness became worst, Su-ho, the son of a gambler is left in their care as his father disappears. Su-ho and Eun-young establish a relationship and spend most of the time looking for crystals on a beach in their village since Eun-young is very skilled at making crystal ornaments with shells. When Su-ho's father returns, Eun-young falls ill and is sent to the hospital. The money her mother saved for her operation disappears as well as Su-ho's father. From there, many misfortunes befall the two friends such as death, separation, and misunderstandings. What becomes of poor Eun-young and her close relationship with Su-ho? What's their relationship with Jae-ha? How does Daniel Henney's character, Philip, play into this whole thing?

The story dragged a bit in the beginning and then really rushed at the end. I wouldn't say that it had the best story (like the director, Yoon Seok-Ho's previous works, Summer Scent and Autumn Tale) ever but it was okay. It was kind of cute and sad, but very typical of other dramas in that it included that love triangle with two people loving the same person but on one side it's unrequited. At least, I was able to sit through the entire drama. Most of it was predictable like who was going to end up with whom and how each characters reaction would be having seen this or hearing that. There weren't any parts where I was so moved or saddened to the point that tears came running down my face but that may have been because the story wasn't very strong or truly creative (harsh, I know).

Spring Waltz provides a couple new faces into the drama scene. The two main leads Jae-ha (Seo Do-young) and Eun-young (Seo Do-young) are decent new actors. Eun-young is very good at expressing happiness but she's not very good at expressing shock or disappointment, even confusion towards the end of the drama when everything is revealed. What appears in her face is like she's just staring at the ground. Seo Do-young acts well as a piano prodigy with his cold, loner persona, so I wasn't very disappointed with him. Philip, played by Daniel Henney was probably the reason for me being attracted to this drama considering the fact that he's a gorgeous model turned actor gaining fame in Korea; HOWEVER, I was truly disappointed after watching the drama. Sure, I fell in love with his "Prince Charming" personality in the drama but with his constant switch between English, German, and Korean when speaking to the other characters; I was just not getting it. Truly made you wonder whether the other characters understood him at all. For instance, he'd speak in German to a character that could speak German and then switch to English when it's obvious the German-speaking person can't speak a drop of English. It's great he can speak all those languages but just stick with one, dude. On to Lee-na�I personally think that she did very well acting as the fianc� of Jae-ha. She was sweet, elegant, and successful. When she got jealous, you hated her for the things she did and just wanted to smack her across the face so I'd have to give her props for doing such a nice job being the antagonist.

In total, there are 20 episodes for Spring Waltz. A bit too long. The middle was slow and uninteresting and towards the end, everything was just rushed, but that could be a good thing because I was getting tired of this jealousy issue and switch between languages.

This drama provided drama and romance. The drama was like any one seen in other K-dramas with love squares: man vs. man for one girl and woman vs. woman for one guy. The romance wasn't very strong between the two characters. I mean they were cute together and all but there was no real passion. Maybe it was the actors' inexperience in acting but I just didn't feel it. I felt friendship and that was it.

Since I'm a classical music fan, I really liked the background music. It was calming and enjoyable. It fit well with the fact that the main character was a pianist. The music also went along with the beautiful scenery of Germany and the islands in Korea.

If you haven't seen the other dramas created by director Yoon Seok-Ho, I guess I'd recommend it to you; otherwise, I'd skip it. It's kind of a disappointment after watching Autumn Tale which had a really good story line as well as characters (and actors woohoo!). I have yet to finish Summer Scent and to start Winter Sonata but so far, the stories are appealing and I haven't yet lost interest. Spring Waltz wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great. I'm looking for greatness! This one was just okay�Anyways, if you happen to be a diehard fan of Daniel Henney, then sure, watch Spring Waltz. You'll get a glimpse of Henney's charms and skills in speaking different languages in this drama. Also watch it for the beautiful scenery and music. It's very soothing.

High-profile Taiwan celebrity couple Vic Zhou and Barbie Hsu has broken up, according to local media reports.

Hsu confirmed the split via her assistant during an activity in Hong Kong on Monday. Zhou's agent also confirmed the news. Both declined to make further comments.

Barbie Hsu's mother told the media the couple parted amicably.

Barbie Hsu, 31, and Vic Zhou, 26, gained wide popularity through the 2001 hit television drama "Meteor Garden." They collaborated in another series, "Mars," in 2004, and officially began dating in July 2005.

Yesterday, Zai Zai who was in Taiyuan, capital city of Shanxi province, China announced the seperation with Barbie.

They were unable to maintain as a love couple but they can become life-long friends of close family ties.

At the press reception, Zai Zai was asked about the news on the break-up;
He said: 'It's true, we have broken up, the feeling with Da S is one from being her boyfriend to that of family member. The feeling of being a family member will be everlasting, this is much better.'

That the cause was forced marriages;

The 32 year old Barbie have been reported to be impatient, wanting to get married and have children,
the reason for her break-up with her former boyfriend Lan zheng Long 4 years ago was also due to the
forced marriage which led to the breakdown of the relationship.

Zai Zai plans in his early life was to be married at the age of 25 and become a dad at age 30.
Never to expect that after his 26th birthday, he is still unwilling to get married, that he had
changed his intentions and to maintain the relationship first.
Even if it was Barbie who initiate the seperation, it is understandable.

There were also reports that Barbie's mother is not too satisfied with this prospective son-inlaw.

Life after being onequarter of the F4 boyband continues its heady spin for Vic Chou, with his film debut and a new solo album.

Taiwanese pop idol Vic Chou dreams of becoming a grandfather. �My grandfather died when I was in primary school. We had a good relationship. I want to be a grandfather so that I can have a long and good relationship with my grandchildren,� he explains.

Which is why he once said that he wanted to be married by the age of 25.

�Before I turned 18, I thought that being married by 25 was a matter of course,� he says.

Nowadays, however, the 26-year-old Chou, or Zaizai as he is known to his fans, is too busy with his career to think about an early marriage.

But girls can forget about making a play for him. He has been dating Taiwanese actress-TV host Barbie Hsu, 31, for about three years.

Besides releasing his third solo album, I�m Not F4, last October, the member of the wildly popular Taiwanese boyband F4 is making his movie debut in the supernatural romance, Linger.

In the film, he plays Tung, an undergraduate who dies in a road accident but is unable to leave the earthly realm as he has unresolved emotional issues.

Throughout the recent press conference in Singapore and in the one-on-one interview later, he had a friendly smile on his face and a lilt in his voice. He came across as earnest, somewhat old-fashioned, and politically correct at times.

You might conclude from the opening anecdote and his choice of cinematic material that Chou is a sentimental romantic at heart.

But he dispels that with very pragmatic reasoning.

�My goal was to build a good foundation in TV before moving on to movies,� says the singer, who shot to fame in 2001 with his fellow bandmates when they starred in the TV series Meteor Garden, which caused an Asian pop culture quake.

Two years ago, having decided that he was ready to make the jump to the big screen, he was approached by To.

�My ultimate goal is to act well and let people see my good work. I first started out on television � it�s not a question of whether film or TV is better. If I had started out doing movies, I would have wanted to prepare myself for TV work as well.�

Asked which aspect of his acting he thinks needs work, he pauses before answering.

�I want to improve my language ability as my Cantonese lines in Linger were dubbed over. It would be good if my linguistic abilities were stronger, be it Cantonese or English.�

Not that he is thinking about making a move to Hollywood, though.

�I don�t have such a long-term goal,� he says. �Besides, there are a lot of good films and scripts right here in Asia. Maybe the budgets are smaller but something like Infernal Affairs was made here and then picked up by Hollywood.

�But I just want to do my job well first.�

Chou has not done too shabbily in the career department since his first hit with the Taiwanese TV idol series Meteor Garden.

In the adaptation of the manga Hana Yori Dango (Boys over Flowers), he played the sensitive Hua Ze Lei � and female fans everywhere swooned.

The other three �flowers� were Jerry Yan, Vanness Wu and Ken Chu; together, they make up the boyband F4. At the height of their popularity in 2002 and 2003, it seemed that the whole of Asia was caught in the grip of F4 mania.

The band paved the way for the current crop of Taiwanese boybands including Fahrenheit and 5566.

Chou�s latest album seems to be a repudiation of his boyband status. The foursome has just launched their first album, Waiting for You, in four years.

Due to copyright issues, the group is now known as JVKV, after the first initial of each of the members� names. The copyright to the name F4 is owned by the Japanese publisher of the manga.

What is different about Vic Chou on his solo albums compared to Vic Chou on the F4 albums?

�When we come together as F4, we have to think about what fans want from F4. We have to come at it from four different angles because there are four of us and, in the end, we need to have a common goal.

�On my solo albums, I can just think about what fans want from me.�

In the years between the F4 releases, Yan, Wu and Chu were busy with their own projects as well. But Chou dismisses talk of the group breaking up.

�We have never thought about splitting up. It�s not possible for us to separate ourselves from F4 and it will be with us for life,� he says emphatically.

He looks to Hong Kong band The Wynners as a model. �They have been together 20, 30 years. Some of them are no longer even in the entertainment scene but when someone makes the call, they still get together to perform.

�This is for life,� he emphasises.

What about the comparisons to newer boybands such as the red-hot Fahrenheit?

He is quick to point out: �We have never badmouthed them. It�s the media playing things up. We can�t stop that so we just have to constantly re-but it.�

He adds magnanimously: �It doesn�t mean that fans of ours cannot be fans of Fahrenheit. Good things should be supported by all.

�In fact, I�m happy if they do well and improve, though that means we would need to do better as well.�

That is a lot riding on those slim shoulders. But perhaps he is now drawing strength from his long-term relationship with Hsu.

They were co-stars on Meteor Garden but began dating only after crossing paths on another manga-based series Mars (2004), which tackled issues such as mental illness and suicide.

Chou�s parents divorced when he was young but that does not seem to have coloured his views about marriage.

The earnest young man admits: �It is very difficult to keep a family and marriage together. It needs time and effort.�

At this point in time, �work is priority and I can�t convince myself to talk about marriage now�. He adds that men should build a career first. �I feel that I can�t just go and ask for someone�s hand in marriage if I have not done so�.

How does Hsu feel about that?

�Our thinking is quite similar. We should concentrate on our careers while we�re young,� she says.

omg!!!! i cant believe this.... 1st of all, when i first heard bout the blossoming dazai love affair...im kinda scared because of the age gap and im afraid if they will break up it might ruin the frienship that they develop....
now..... my fear comes to reality they really broke up.... all i pray is taht they continue to be good friends after the devastating break up.... it really makes me cry!!!

After 5 years, in order to fulfill their contract with SonyBMG, F4 released their group album again, and their charm appeared to maintain in the press conference. However, things did change. Luckily, the appearance of Yan Cheng Xu and Vanness Wu hasn't changed much, otherwise, the too skinny ZZ and too chubby Zhu Xiao Tian are difficult to be recognized as the used-to-be handsome boys.

F4 beats Farenhait No. 1 on the sales chart in Japan

It was reported that F4 new album's 2 different versions (with 2 different covers) and its Japanese version score the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in Japan HMV's World Best Sellers Chart and Farenhait is No. 6. In the Asian Best Sellers Chart, F4 is in No. 4 and Farenhait is No. 12...Yan Cheng Xu's agent, Zhang Mao Liang, indicates that it is happy to see everyone get good scores in Japan.
